Make it clear!
Over my three years of working in the service industry I have learned many lessons and this post will focus on the idea of ensuring your client is comfortable and trustworthy in you during their appointment.
Vocal Communication
We know we wash our hands, sanitize any supplies, and take any and all safety precautions. However, just because we know this it doesn’t mean our clients do. Although I have always properly sterilized and cleaned my lash studio I did find that on some occasions new clients would come to their appointment and ask questions about how I sterilize my tools due to a negative experience they had with a past technician. I have had clients come into my studio who had developed an eye infection in the past and their doctor concluded it was due to the improper sterilization of the tools and equipment done by their past technician. Because of these experiences I have had some first time clients come to their appointment carrying the worry of leaving their appointment resulting in a negative experience.
This is where vocally communicating with your clients comes in play.
Whether you have a new client or existing client come to their appointment with you it is important to explain every step of what you are doing. First and foremost, tell your client you are going to wash your hands. Just by saying this aloud, your client knows for sure that your hands will not be making contact with the client’s face without being washed. Personally, I always leave to wash my hands, then return to my chair and use hand sanitizer as well (this is the artist’s choice to take this extra step).
Second, when you are about to apply the first product to your client’s eyes make it clear what the product is and its purpose. For example, I always give my clients a lash bath after their consultation and I explain that the foaming cleanser helps get rid of any dirt, makeup, or any natural body oils that are on their eyelashes or around the eye area. I explain that oil does not mix well with adhesive, which is why I clean the lashes first before applying the eyelash extensions. By explaining each product and its purpose your clients will gain more trust in you as a technician because it is clear you are knowledgeable of the products you are exposing to your client’s eyes.
Tip: I have found that many UV Sterilizers have a voice system implemented within them that says when the sterilization cycle is beginning and when it has been completed. By having a product that says aloud that tools are being sterilized will make it clear to your client that their technician is in fact cleaning their supplies.
As a technician, it is important to clarify to your client any and all safety precautions, steps to the procedure, and products you will be exposing to their eyes. So with this being said, let’s make sure our clients know they are in the safest of hands the moment they enter their appointment!
